Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg is Donating $100 Million to Education
As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is planning to announce a donation of $100 million dollars to help the education system in Newark, NJ.
The donation has the potential to be matched by another $100 million that Newark’s mayor, Cory Booker, has been working on raising from private foundations and others.
Newark spends about $22,000 a year on each of its 40,000 pupils, but only about half of its students graduate. Of those who do, only one-fifth go on to a four-year colleges. More than 85% of the Newark students at community colleges need remedial help in math and English.
This move is really setting the standard for donations to our education system. According to this article, last year Bill and Melinda Gates over the years have donated $100 million to the education system in Tampa. This is a trend that will hopefully catch on with all large corporations in the United States. Just imagine the possibilities if everyone decided to give back and invest in our children. Hats off to mark Zuckerberg and Facebook.
